Openai's revenue surpasses $50 billion, seeks $30 billion in new funding
OpenAI's annualized revenue through September reached $50 billion, according to reports from the Financial Times and Axios. This figure differs from a previously reported $70 billion due to variations in accounting standards for revenue recognition through partner sales. OpenAI only counts its share as revenue, while companies like Anthropic record the full amount paid by customers. Despite these differences, OpenAI's business is expanding rapidly, with third-quarter revenue growing 77% year-over-year and enterprise revenue rising 107%. The company now expects annualized revenue to reach at least $70 billion by year-end.
OpenAI is actively pursuing new fundraising efforts, aiming to raise at least $30 billion with a pre-money valuation target of $140 billion. Earlier this year, the company had raised $12.2 billion with a post-money valuation of $85.2 billion. However, the significant funding needs have raised concerns in the market, with tech stocks, particularly chip stocks, falling after the release of financial reports. Analysts are closely watching whether AI companies can sustain growth amid high computing costs and deliver measurable productivity improvements to enterprises.
