Otter.ai expands beyond transcription to enhance workday efficiency
Otter.ai, a Mountain View-based startup, is evolving its AI transcription tool to offer deeper insights into workplace communication. Founded eight years ago, the company initially focused on real-time audio-to-text conversion for free.
However, with increased competition in 2026, Otter is shifting its strategy to address inefficiencies in meetings. Alex Gay, Otter’s new CMO, emphasized that transcription alone was never the goal. Instead, the company aims to improve productivity by analyzing conversations and suggesting next steps during meetings.
Otter introduced three new features, centered around the 'whole meeting life cycle,' to break the cycle of unproductive meetings. The platform now offers a free Basic tier and three paid tiers, with over 40 million users, though exact payment figures are undisclosed.
The Pre-Meeting Brief, one of the new features, automatically compiles insights from past meetings and integrated tools to prepare users for upcoming discussions.
