Political candidates across the U.S. are using AI and data centers as focal points in their campaigns, emphasizing rising electricity costs and resource exploitation. Business Insider analyzed 130 TV ads aired between January 2025 and September 2026, revealing bipartisan criticism of AI’s environmental and economic impacts. Republicans and Democrats alike highlight data centers’ effects on water, land, and energy costs, with some candidates linking these issues to broader affordability concerns. Fred Simon, a Republican candidate, stated that data centers 'drain our water, drive up our power bills, and threaten our way of life.' Campaigns also criticize corporate tax breaks for AI infrastructure, with Democrats focusing on environmental conservation and Republicans emphasizing land use and private property concerns. A September poll found 61% of likely voters oppose data centers for AI, while a June Pew survey showed half of U.S. adults are more concerned than excited about AI’s rise. Political messaging aims to capitalize on these fears, with ads like those from Public First Action offering a positive spin on AI’s potential. Digital ads further amplify anti-data center sentiment, with over 700 campaigns using Meta and YouTube to spread critical messaging. Tom Egan of Absecon Group highlighted the widespread concern, stating that data centers are the most tangible visualization of voters’ worries about AI. As states like Pennsylvania and Texas shift from supporting to blocking data-center projects, AI’s political salience is expected to grow in the coming years.
