Radiologists will adapt, not be replaced by AI

In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the 'godfather of AI,' predicted that radiologists would be replaced by computers within five years.
However, the field has responded by referencing Mark Twain’s quote: 'The report of my death was an exaggeration.' Despite this, the number of radiologists is expected to grow by 26 percent or more over the next three decades.
Hinton’s prediction, while not fully realized in terms of job loss, has proven accurate in highlighting the emergence of AI as a capable colleague in radiology. Radiology is the leading area in medicine for AI adoption, serving as a bellwether for the integration of expert decision-making systems in healthcare and potentially other fields.
By early 2026, about three-quarters of the 1,400 AI-enabled medical devices cleared by the FDA were for radiology. These tools enhance efficiency by drafting reports or highlighting urgent images.
Some AI systems, however, have the potential to surpass human performance by detecting abnormalities invisible to the human eye or interpreting images as well as, or better than, trained radiologists. An analysis of 43 clinical trials concluded that AI-assisted colonoscopies reveal more polyps than conventional ones.
