Restate secures $20m to power AI agent workflows
Restate, a Berlin-based startup, has raised $20 million in Series A funding led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The funding comes as demand for durable infrastructure grows with the rise of AI agents. Founded in 2022, Restate initially aimed to create a resilient execution engine for multi-step workflows, which later proved ideal for managing AI agent processes. Stephen Ewen, co-founder and CEO, noted that while the platform wasn't originally designed for agents, it became a perfect fit for their needs.
Restate's unique architecture, which includes its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers, allows it to be fast and lightweight. This has enabled the company to attract high-profile customers like Replit and serve Fortune 500 clients, including in finance. The company plans to use the funds to expand its team and office in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ewen believes Restate's technology will soon be essential for companies beyond traditional tech, akin to a database.
Ewen previously co-created Apache Flink and led Data Artisans, which was acquired by Alibaba in 2019. The other co-founders of Restate are former colleagues from Data Artisans and Verver, where Ewen served as CTO for three years.
