Ricursive intelligence leverages AI to revolutionize chip design and tackle compute crisis
Ricursive Intelligence, founded by Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini, is pioneering the use of AI to design more efficient chips, aiming to address the growing demand for computational power. The startup showcased its approach at TechCrunch Disrupt, emphasizing the need for more efficient chip design to meet the anticipated 10,000x increase in compute demand over the next five years. Goldie highlighted the importance of optimizing chip efficiency to reduce reliance on expanding data centers.
The founders explained that AI can discover unconventional chip layouts, such as the 'donut-shaped' design developed by their previous AI system, AlphaChip. They are shifting from traditional block-based chip design to optimizing entire chips, enabling intricate patterns like wave-like designs. This approach allows for faster chip development, potentially enabling custom chips for diverse applications such as space, AR, VR, and biological computing.
Goldie argued that AI should handle execution while humans focus on innovation, a model already evident in chip design, software development, and other fields. The startup believes this shift will make chip design more financially viable and energy-efficient, paving the way for a new era in computing.
