Rivian and Volkswagen expand AI collaboration with new assistant technology
Rivian and Volkswagen Group have expanded their $5.8 billion joint venture to include Rivian’s AI voice assistant technology. The collaboration, which began in 2024, now involves licensing elements of Rivian’s AI assistant to Volkswagen, potentially integrating it into the ID EVERY1, a low-cost EV. The AI assistant, which launched in May 2026 for Rivian’s R1S, R1T, and October 2026 for the R2, is described by Rivian as a proof point of its platform’s extensibility. RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s founder and CEO, highlighted the company’s in-house agentic framework, which could allow third-party AI agents, such as those from Anthropic, to operate within Rivian vehicles. The partnership aligns with Rivian’s vertical integration strategy, which enables rapid OTA updates and advanced software capabilities. Volkswagen, struggling to compete with Tesla’s software-centric vehicles, has invested heavily in Rivian’s technology, which includes a new electric architecture reducing ECUs from 17 to 7.
Rivian’s vertical integration strategy, emphasized in its third-quarter earnings report, has led to overhauling its flagship R1T and R1S models. The company’s control over the entire technology stack, including compute, sensors, and software, allows for seamless updates and advanced features. This has attracted Volkswagen’s attention and investment, with the joint venture initially valued at $5 billion, later increased to $5.8 billion by 2027. The collaboration underscores Rivian’s ambition to lead in AI-driven automotive innovation.
