Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has introduced an AI assistant for its cars, allowing drivers and passengers to interact via voice commands. CEO RJ Scaringe hinted at future plans to integrate AI agents from companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta into Rivian’s software. While no timeline was provided, the company pointed to its 'AI & Autonomy Day' event in December for more details. Scaringe emphasized the need for careful integration, noting that vehicle-level controls will not be entrusted to AI agents. The company has developed its own in-house framework to manage user requests, routing them to the appropriate software components. As of May 2026, the system could access external apps like Google Calendar, with plans to incorporate advanced AI models from frontier companies. Rivian aims to connect vehicle systems with user context from apps like Muse, enabling seamless interactions such as adjusting seat settings based on prior conversations. Rivian is not the first automaker to explore AI agents in cars, following Tesla’s integration of Grok chatbots.
