SentinelOne, a cybersecurity firm, has significantly accelerated its malware analysis process using OpenAI's Daybreak model, reducing the time required from weeks to hours. Gregor Stewart, Chief AI Officer at SentinelOne, highlighted that this advancement allows for human-level reverse-engineering in about eight hours, compared to the traditional four to six weeks. This efficiency enables researchers to investigate more threats and identify connections between samples that were previously overlooked. Stewart emphasized that while automation enhances analysis, accountability remains a human responsibility. He noted that decisions involving fundamental changes to software architecture still require human oversight, while routine tasks can be automated. With faster analysis, SentinelOne's team can now compare more malware samples, uncovering shared components and broader threat relationships, which aid in proactive defense strategies. The integration of OpenAI's cyber capabilities has also expanded access to expertise within SentinelOne, allowing more team members to contribute to security work. Stewart aims to incorporate these tools into code creation, enabling developers to address security issues during the development process.
