ServiceNow, facing competition from startups like Serval, has launched Flow, a conversational AI service desk designed for Slack and Microsoft Teams. Flow allows employees to request services like password resets in plain language, with agentic AI handling or escalating tasks. The product is in controlled availability but can be set up within a day without infrastructure or migration requirements. ServiceNow’s chairman, Bill McDermott, emphasized that Flow offers small and mid-sized businesses enterprise AI benefits without complexity. He argued that Flow’s integration of orchestration, context, and security sets it apart from competitors. Meanwhile, Salesforce’s Marc Benioff highlighted Slack’s distribution advantage, used by a million businesses, compared to ServiceNow’s 9,000 clients. Serval, which recently raised $75 million at a $1 billion valuation, has also positioned itself as a ServiceNow alternative. Anas Biad, a Sequoia Capital partner, noted that Serval’s strong customer feedback was similar to what Sequoia saw when backing ServiceNow 16 years ago. ServiceNow claims Flow can reach the 'Fortune 500,000,' referring to a broad range of small and mid-sized companies. McDermott stated that Flow provides 'zero upfront expense' and 'pay only for what you consume,' positioning it as a scalable solution for businesses seeking simplicity and efficiency.
