Shanghai police crack down on ai-driven rumor-mongering and extortion scheme

Shanghai police have arrested a suspect accused of using AI-generated false articles to defame a tech company and demand 2.3 million yuan in extortion. The suspect, Wang, operated a self-media account that published over ten false reports about the company, which had recently announced a financing deal. The articles falsely speculated on the company's financial status and business strength, causing reputational damage and operational concerns. Wang initially demanded 300,000 yuan to remove the content but later escalated the extortion to 2 million yuan by continuing to publish false information. Police confirmed the articles were entirely fabricated, with Wang having no professional ties to the company. Wang is now under criminal compulsory measures for suspected extortion, and all false content has been removed. This case is part of a broader crackdown by Shanghai police, which reported solving over 100 cases of false enterprise rumors this year and removing 87,000 pieces of false information. The police also solved 68 cases of enterprise hacking and arrested more than 210 suspects. The incident highlights the growing use of AI in spreading misinformation and the legal consequences for those engaging in such activities.
