Shopify enables AI agents to complete purchases via browser-based checkout

Shopify has expanded its support for AI agents by allowing them to complete purchases on its platform. The company announced that browser-based AI agents can now process transactions on Shopify merchants’ sites, extending their capabilities beyond product searches and cart additions. This update includes WebMCP support for checkout, enabling agents to read, update, and submit transactions with buyer authorization. Gil Greenberg, a Shopify product manager, highlighted the feature’s rollout to eligible merchants, emphasizing its efficiency over traditional HTML navigation. The update introduces three tools—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—to manage order details. Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) underpins both its hosted MCP server and the proposed WebMCP standard, which facilitates browser-based agent operations. Partnerships with AI agents like Muse and Instinct further underscore Shopify’s commitment to agentic commerce.
