Shopify launches ai-powered site builder to simplify online store creation

Shopify has launched Canvas, an AI-driven tool that enables merchants to build online stores through natural language interaction. The platform allows users to chat with Shopify’s AI assistant, Sidekick, to create and customize their stores in real time. Unlike previous no-code builders, Canvas provides a live preview of the store’s code, enabling merchants to test interactivity and responsiveness across different devices. Sidekick also captures screenshots to ensure alignment with the user’s view. Canvas represents a shift toward AI-assisted website development, joining tools from Wix, Squarespace, and others. While users can still edit elements manually, the tool is designed for those who prefer conversational interaction. Shopify has enhanced Sidekick’s capabilities to work directly with theme files and simplify theme architecture. The product is in its early stages, but it aims to make online selling more accessible to non-technical users without the need for developers or designers.
