Similarweb reports ChatGPT maintains lead in web-based AI chatbot traffic with 55.5% share in august 2026

Similarweb has released its August 2026 data on web traffic for AI chatbots, showing ChatGPT continues to dominate with a 55.5% market share, up from 52.7% three months earlier. However, its share has dropped significantly compared to the same period last year, when it was at 73.3%. Meanwhile, Gemini's share has doubled to 25.6%, while Anthropic's Claude increased from 1.9% to 9.3%. DeepSeek, Grok, and Perplexity remain at 3.4%, 2.4%, and 0.9% respectively. The data only reflects website traffic and does not include mobile app usage, which could significantly affect the actual user base. For instance, Google's Gemini benefits from the Android ecosystem, leading to substantial mobile usage not captured in website traffic statistics. While ChatGPT still leads in web traffic, the report emphasizes that website traffic alone cannot fully represent the real user engagement and scale of these AI services.
