AI startup secures $13 million to develop human-like voice agents
Smallest.ai, a company launched in late 2024, completed a $13 million Series A funding round led by Seligman Ventures, joined by Sierra Ventures and 3one4 Capital, bringing total funding to over $21 million.
Rather than scaling large language models, the startup builds compact voice models specifically tuned for natural conversation. Its technology processes speech in real time, mimicking human-like interaction where listening, thinking, and speaking occur simultaneously, achieving near-instantaneous response times. When a query falls outside the model's knowledge base, the system hands off to a larger foundational model while the user briefly waits.
The platform currently serves customers including RingCentral and Truecaller. Smallest.ai faces competition from voice AI providers such as ElevenLabs, Cartesia, and regional specialist Sarvam. The company's strategy centers on a dual-model approach where a small specialized model handles real-time dialogue and a larger model solves complex problems. Its competitive advantage lies in handling language diversity, accent variation, and noisy environments.
