Snorkel ai's valuation surpasses $3.5 billion amid surge in AI training data demand
Snorkel AI, a startup specializing in AI training data and simulated environments, has secured a $350 million Series E funding round at a $3.5 billion valuation. This marks a tripling of its valuation from the $1.3 billion figure at its Series D round 17 months ago. The funding was led by Insight Partners and S32, with participation from existing investors such as Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo. Snorkel has shifted its focus from data labeling automation to offering completed data sets, a model it calls data-as-a-service. The company now reports an annualized revenue run-rate of $375 million, an 18-fold increase over the past year. Snorkel's unique approach combines synthetic data generation with human expertise, distinguishing it from competitors like Mercor, Handshake, and Micro1, which rely heavily on domain specialists.
Snorkel's business model differs in that it accounts for payments to human experts within its cost of goods sold, rather than in its revenue figures. The company launched commercially in 2019 after four years of research at Stanford. As AI labs continue to demand high-quality training data, Snorkel's position in the market is growing rapidly, with its valuation reflecting the industry's increasing reliance on such services.
