Sonos launches ai-driven app and new audio products amid software reforms
Sonos has unveiled a new app update, integrating generative AI features, alongside new audio products, as part of its effort to rebuild trust after a series of software issues in 2024.
The company, which previously faced backlash for breaking its app and losing key features, now positions itself as an 'audio operating system' with its Sonos 27 platform. The update includes AI-driven voice commands, customizable agents, and improved user interface elements.
Sonos 27 will work with its S2 app but not the older S1 app, meaning older hardware won’t access these features. The company also introduced the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, which can connect via Wi-Fi to the broader Sonos system.
Brandon Holley, interim hardware lead, emphasized the shift from a speaker company to an audio operating system. Despite efforts to be transparent, Sonos has delayed compatibility details. AI features will be opt-in, reflecting a more customer-centric approach, as stated by Sid Patel, vice president of software.
