SpaceX CEO elon Musk limits Grok bot usage citing high operational costs
Grok Bot users experienced unexpected usage caps over the Halloween weekend, with some reporting their weekly usage jumped to 100% even without overnight activity. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed via X that this was intentional, stating in a reply to a user that the cost of operating Grok Bot was unsustainably high compared to the revenue it generated.
This development comes as Grok Bot has been highlighted as a success for the newly public SpaceX. The company recently disclosed in a filing that AI accounts for 52% of its income, and its Super Intelligence division reportedly achieved a $431 million profit, despite absorbing $1.2 billion in one-time costs related to the acquisition of Cursor. Musk had previously described Grok Bot as having the fastest product growth he had ever witnessed.
While Musk has not detailed future changes to subscriber limits, the company's financial performance, including the profit from its AI division, was previously noted in a filing from last month.
