Spotify introduces ai-powered music remixing service with potential additional fees
Spotify is set to launch an AI music remixing service in the first quarter of 2027, allowing paid subscribers to rearrange or cover existing songs using artificial intelligence. The service is expected to debut around the Grammy Awards in February 2027, though the exact launch date and pricing remain to be finalized. The company plans to charge an additional $4 to $5 per month for the feature.
The service will focus on licensed existing music, enabling users to transform a folk song into a dance track or simulate one singer performing another's work. Spotify has secured licensing agreements with Universal Music Group, Merlin, and Believe, and is in negotiations with Sony Music and Warner Music. Artists retain the right to decide whether to authorize their works for AI remixes. The platform also intends to include AI remixes in playlists, count related streams toward original songs' chart performance, and share royalty revenue with original artists.
Spotify is exploring new subscription revenue streams through AI music services, aiming for 15% annual revenue growth by 2030. Bernstein analysts predict that 7% to 8% of Spotify's U.S. subscribers may opt for AI music services by the end of 2028. As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, licensing, artist rights, and revenue-sharing mechanisms will be critical for scaling these services.
