Stability AI secures $76 million in series b funding to expand creative AI tools
Stability AI, the company behind the AI image generation model Stable Diffusion, has raised $76 million in Series B funding, bringing its total fundraising to $232 million.
The round, announced on Tuesday, includes investments from major entertainment industry players such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts, along with venture firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.
The investment reflects the growing reliance of these companies on Stability AI for content licensing and distribution. Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI and a recent addition to the company, stated the funding validates the vision of generative AI empowering creators across music, video, and image production.
The company plans to use the funds to expand its 'creative production' product suite and grow its professional services division. Stability AI, founded in 2019, has been actively forming partnerships with entertainment firms, including Universal Music and EA in October 2023, and Warner Music in November 2023.
The company has also achieved legal success in a copyright case against Getty Images in the UK, though a similar case in the US remains ongoing. In 2023, Stability AI faced a lawsuit from co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who alleged he was misled by co-founder Emad Mostaque into selling his shares in the company.
