Starbucks explores AI integration in drive-thru to improve order accuracy and speed
Starbucks is exploring the integration of artificial intelligence in its drive-thru lanes to enhance order accuracy and speed. CEO Brian Niccol mentioned during a recent analyst call that the company is testing AI models to assist baristas in capturing orders more efficiently, allowing staff to focus on customer interactions. The initiative aims to streamline the ordering process and reduce wait times.
The company is also researching identification technology that could recognize customers upon arrival, enabling personalized digital menus and simplified payment processes. Niccol emphasized that the project is in its early stages, with plans to test and refine the technology before broader implementation.
Despite years of AI testing in drive-thru settings by major chains, the technology remains underutilized. Burger King has opted against widespread adoption, citing customer preference for human interaction, while McDonald's is testing its own system, claiming it could save hundreds of hours of labor per store weekly.
