Talkspace introduces ai-powered mental health app to address crisis and stigma
Talkspace, a leading virtual therapy company, has launched Tee, an AI-powered mental health app designed to identify extreme distress and escalate cases to human caregivers. The app, available to users over 18 for $19.99 per month, was developed by clinicians and trained using anonymized data from Talkspace's platform.
The company reported that the number of U.S. mental health facilities offering telemedicine services increased from 38 percent in 2019 to over 68 percent by 2020. Dr.
Nikole Benders-Hadl, Talkspace’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasized that Tee is distinct from other large language models, as it is trained on clinical data and evidence-based therapy techniques. She noted that many people are using models like ChatGPT for mental health support, despite these models not being designed for such purposes.
Talkspace has also engaged in research with academic partners such as Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Stanford, receiving four National Institute of Health grants totaling about $10 million. The company has made clear that all data used for training and research is de-identified and encrypted.
Benders-Hadl highlighted the importance of addressing mental health as a preventative measure, particularly for communities of color facing unique stressors such as discrimination and inequities in access to care.
She emphasized the need for culturally informed technology to build trust and improve engagement among historically marginalized communities. Talkspace has designed Tee to be session-based, with built-in safeguards to prevent overuse and ensure it is used for its intended purpose of mental health support.
