The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the results of the latest round of top-level domain applications, receiving 1,615 submissions from 481 global applicants. AI-related domains have become a major focus, with tech giants competing for names like .agent, .agi, .asi, and .superintelligence. OpenAI submitted 15 applications, while Meta submitted 21, highlighting the strategic importance of these domains. Additionally, 345 enterprise-specific domains were applied for, including .facebook, .meta, .chatgpt, and .claude. These domains will be used for product pages and official services. ICANN noted that the applications will not take effect until next year, with ongoing review and approval processes. The competition reflects the growing significance of domain names in the AI sector, as companies seek to strengthen their brand presence online. The race for top-level domains underscores the increasing role of AI in the digital landscape. While submitting applications is a crucial first step, the activation of these domains remains pending until the review process is complete. This round of applications marks a significant shift in how tech companies are positioning themselves in the evolving internet ecosystem. With AI at the forefront, the competition for domain names is expected to intensify in the coming years, as companies strive to secure a digital identity that aligns with their brand and innovation goals.
