Tech giants explore building AI data centers in argentina's patagonia
On September 9, 2026, it was reported that OpenAI, Amazon, and Google are assessing the feasibility of constructing large-scale AI data centers in Argentina's Patagonia region. The area, located at the southern tip of South America, is primarily in Argentina with small parts in Chile, is known for its 17,300 glaciers, cool climate, and abundant energy resources. OpenAI is reportedly planning to invest $25 billion (approximately 168.2 billion RMB) to build a 500MW clean energy data center there. The region's cold climate reduces cooling needs, while existing hydroelectric, wind, and gas facilities, along with expanding solar power, make it an attractive location.
Argentina's favorable social environment also supports the project, as local residents have not shown resistance, and President Javier Milei has expressed support for foreign investment. However, the upcoming 2027 presidential election introduces uncertainty, which could impact long-term projects like data centers. Additionally, while the government is improving fiber-optic infrastructure, current network limitations remain a challenge. If these issues are resolved, Argentina could become a key global hub for AI data centers.
