Teen developer creates native macOS driver for hp printer using AI tool
A teenager developer, Kuber Mehta, has successfully created a native macOS driver for a rarely supported HP Laser 1008a printer using the Claude Code AI tool from Anthropic. The project highlights the potential of AI programming tools in addressing compatibility issues with niche hardware.
Mehta discovered that his HP printer did not work on macOS and used Claude Code to assist in analyzing existing software, reverse-engineering the printing process, and writing or modifying code. The entire process took approximately four hours.
The initial version of the project relied on a proprietary rastertospl codec from HP's Linux driver, running within a Linux container. However, Mehta later removed this dependency, opting instead for a modified open-source SpliX printing engine paired with native macOS USB components.
The project is now open-source and supports the HP Laser 1003, 1006, and 1008 series printers. IT之家 provided a link to the project's repository for further information.
