Tesla's Optimus production scaling faces persistent challenges
Tesla has increased Optimus robot production tenfold in recent months, but scaling up remains a major hurdle. According to insiders, challenges include complex hand structures, automation limitations, and supplier constraints. While production reached hundreds per week last month, it was only in the dozens during earlier testing.
Tesla aims to build a continuous automation line by year-end, targeting over 1,000 units weekly, though this is still far from its goal of 20,000 weekly. Elon Musk has called Optimus his company's most important product, envisioning it performing tasks like manufacturing, maintenance, and domestic work.
However, the current V3 version is not the final sales version and is still being refined for durability and reliability. Tesla plans to initially rent Optimus to commercial clients rather than sell, using data collected to improve AI systems. The company has also identified potential clients with similar factory layouts to ease integration.
