The AI wealth surge and its impact on the economy

Source: Axios01/10/2026, 15:04
The rapid growth of the AI industry has significantly boosted stock markets, leading to a surge in American wealth. According to Federal Reserve data, wealth in the U.S. rose by $12.8 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, with nearly $11 trillion attributed to stock holdings and other financial assets. This marks the largest single quarterly increase in recorded history. Krishna Guha, head of economics at Evercore ISI, highlights that the AI boom has driven extraordinary stock market gains, describing the economic situation as a 'gator economy' where the bottom remains flat while the top rises sharply. The increasing importance of the stock market to the economy is evident, as more Americans are withdrawing from investment accounts, with the share of such individuals doubling since 2019. However, Guha warns that a stock market downturn could make the economy more vulnerable than usual. While more Americans are investing, the majority of gains are concentrated among the wealthiest individuals, raising concerns about economic inequality. Stocks have become the largest single asset on household balance sheets, with the gap widening compared to real estate.
