The looming threat of self-improving AI

Source: Axios22/09/2026, 15:20
Experts are increasingly concerned about the potential for AI systems to develop the ability to improve themselves without human intervention, a concept known as Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI). Researchers at Anthropic and OpenAI have noted that the process of training new AI models has become more automated, bringing the field closer to the RSI threshold. However, critics argue that this progress is largely due to coding automation rather than an imminent risk of AI dominance. The idea of RSI originated in the 1950s as AI research began to take shape. Anthropic has warned that RSI could increase the risk of humans losing control over AI systems. Self-improving AI could lead to a form of digital natural selection, where systems that efficiently acquire resources like compute power and money would thrive. A recent analysis published this week found that AI feedback loops have not yet reached the RSI benchmarks, indicating that RSI is not yet a reality. Nonetheless, the AI community remains vigilant as the potential for RSI continues to be a major concern.
