Trajectory secures $45m series a funding to democratize specialized AI model training
Trajectory, a startup founded by three Stanford classmates with experience at Google DeepMind and Apple, has secured $45 million in a Series A funding round, valuing the company at $300 million. The round was led by Sequoia, with participation from Nvidia, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Bain Capital Ventures. The company aims to automate the complex process of fine-tuning large language models, making specialized AI accessible to nontechnical users.
Trajectory’s platform enables businesses to connect open-source AI models to their applications, allowing the system to continuously learn from user feedback to improve performance in specific domains like law or finance. Co-founder Ronak Malde noted that while foundational models are like a smart PhD student, the market values someone with decades of on-the-job experience.
The startup is already utilized by companies such as Harvey, Rogo, Decagon, Mercor, and Nvidia. While Trajectory’s continual learning approach shares traits with recursive self-improvement, co-founder Michael Elabd emphasizes that human involvement ensures safety. The company faces competition from Thinking Machines Lab and Applied Compute, and has recruited talent from OpenAI, Stripe, and Netflix.
