Tristan harris’ nonprofit shifts focus to founder-led initiatives amid staff cuts
The Center for Humane Technology (CHT), co-founded by Tristan Harris, is laying off about half of its 16 non-founder employees, according to ex-staffers. The organization is pivoting from policy research and litigation to 'founder-led' projects, including public education and private coordination.
The board cited the need to focus on 'what we have always done best' amid accelerated AI risks. Harris, who has warned of an 'AI takeover,' recently starred in a Netflix documentary urging Congress to intervene. CHT’s board, led by Premal Shah, announced the shift last week, ending litigation support and AI tool evaluations.
Internal conflicts over strategy had persisted for years, with some former employees criticizing the fast-paced culture and Harris’ shifting priorities. Despite recent courtroom victories against social media companies, the nonprofit faces criticism for prioritizing Harris’ influence over broader policy concerns.
