Ukraine deploys ai-controlled turrets in battle against russian drones
Ukraine is increasingly relying on AI-controlled .50-caliber gun turrets in its fight against Russian drones, with these systems now considered an essential part of its air defense strategy. Brave1, Ukraine's defense innovation platform, reported that automated turrets have destroyed dozens of enemy drones over Kyiv in the last month. The systems, developed as experimental technology since 2024, are primarily used to counter Russian drones like the Geran-5 and Banderol. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised their effectiveness, stating they have proven highly successful against these targets. One such system, the Sky Sentinel, developed by Carmine Sky, can spin 36,000 degrees and lock onto targets while firing, with a human operator required to authorize each shot. Each turret costs about $150,000.
Brave1 also showcased other automated turrets, claiming they have shot down at least 60 targets under its Private Air Defense Project. Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat confirmed that AI-powered turrets have successfully downed Russian jet-powered drones for the first time. Kyiv is accelerating its integration of AI into its military operations, using it for tasks like predicting drone strikes and conducting autonomous supply runs. With Russia ramping up its use of turbojet-equipped drones, Ukraine is developing multiple tools to counter these threats, with AI turrets playing a key role in its defensive strategy.
