Uk's largest AI supercomputer faces power crisis, delayed to mid-2030s

The UK's largest AI supercomputer project, located in Loughton, Essex, faces significant delays due to power supply issues. Originally scheduled to launch in 2027, the project may now be delayed until the mid-2030s. UK Power Networks (UKPN) has informed Nscale, the company building the supercomputer, that the grid will not be able to supply sufficient power until the early to mid-2030s. Nscale has stated that the project will still proceed, but the lack of a quick solution highlights the growing challenge of energy supply for data centers. Nscale has also begun exploring on-site power generation and ways to expedite grid connection. The UK's Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) warned that power connection applications are backed up, with 315 data centers currently waiting to connect, collectively requiring 73GW of power—far exceeding the national peak demand of 45GW. The Loughton project seeks a power capacity of 90MW, equivalent to the energy needs of about 31.5 households.
