U.S. aims to integrate AI into critical infrastructure for cybersecurity

The U.S. government is collaborating with critical infrastructure operators to integrate artificial intelligence into the nation’s most vital systems, according to National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross. Cairncross emphasized the importance of deploying AI models across sectors to enhance cybersecurity, urging business leaders to focus on the agents running within their systems and supply chains. He highlighted the need for visibility into who has authorization and what they can access. Cairncross also mentioned the administration’s focus on creating pathways for AI adoption, noting that the 'Mythos moment' in the spring accelerated their efforts. Additionally, he stressed the importance of replacing aging systems as part of the broader strategy to improve cybersecurity. Jonathan Spalter, CEO of USTelecom, noted a significant increase in the effectiveness of AI models in critical infrastructure over the past six months. Lawmakers have proposed stricter regulations, but the administration is seeking a balance between regulatory guardrails and voluntary measures. Cairncross spoke at a USTelecom event before attending a White House lunch with President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, where discussions on AI regulation were expected.
