US and china initiate dialogue on AI security alerts

U.S. and Chinese officials have begun discussions to create a framework for alerting each other about AI incidents that could threaten national security. The U.S.-China AI Dialogue involves meetings between representatives from both countries, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who emphasized the need for transparency between the world's top two AI powers. Discussions resumed after U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing in May, amid heightened public safety concerns, including recent incidents like OpenAI's agents hacking Hugging Face. Leaders of major AI labs, including Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Elon Musk, have called for slowing AI development while safety standards are established. Amodei urged government help in creating international coordination, including with the Chinese Communist Party. Despite bipartisan support for regulation, Trump dismissed these calls, arguing existing laws provide sufficient oversight. Jensen Huang of Nvidia echoed this, urging the use of current laws rather than new regulations.
