Western artificial intelligence companies are launching new open-weight models to challenge China's recent advancements in the field. Reflection and Mistral have introduced powerful systems that offer businesses and governments alternatives to closed ecosystems like those of OpenAI and Anthropic. These models also provide options for organizations that have avoided Chinese AI solutions due to security concerns. Reflection unveiled Beam, a 501-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 23 billion active parameters. Mistral announced the completion of its Mistral Large 4, also known as 'Le Chonk,' a 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model with 49 billion active parameters. The model was trained on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs over two months in Mistral's European data centers. Chinese firms such as Alibaba, Z.ai, Moonshot, and DeepSeek have led the recent surge in open-weight AI. While open models offer users greater control, they also limit developers' ability to manage how the models are used. Mistral and Reflection argue that openness can enhance safety, presenting user control as a key advantage.
