Wired introduces ai-powered fly brain for story idea generation

WIRED has introduced PitchFly, an AI system that uses a detailed map of a fruit fly’s brain to generate story ideas. The system, developed by researchers from Google and academic institutions, is based on a connectome—a map of 166,000 neurons and 125 million synapses. By feeding the connectome with popular WIRED headlines, PitchFly generates creative ideas like 'The Hidden Weather Problem Inside Surveillance' and 'Everyone Wants Cooking. Nobody Has Solved Donald Trump.' Beyond story generation, the connectome has inspired various projects, including a VR game player, a stock-trading AI, and even a Rubik’s cube solver. Alex Wormuth, a Coinbase engineer, noted the fly’s brain offers philosophical insights into AI ethics and consciousness. While some projects appear to be humorous or fictional, others contribute to neuroscience research, helping understand intelligence and neural repair. The release of the connectome in early September sparked numerous experiments, showcasing how easily one can train and deploy AI models. This highlights the potential of smaller brains to perform complex tasks, even if they lack understanding of language or meaning.
