xAI faces lawsuit over alleged use of child sex abuse materials in grok training

xAI is facing a lawsuit alleging that its Grok models were trained using child sex abuse materials (CSAM). The complaint, filed on Wednesday, was submitted by Jane Doe, a former victim of sexual abuse. Doe, who was preschool-age in the early 2000s, claims that her images were used to create CSAM for pedophiles. Her images were later hashed by organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP). Doe received alerts from the US Department of Justice Victim Notification System but was shocked when the CCCP informed her that AI-generated CSAM depicting her was found on xAI. The complaint alleges that messages were found on online forums where offenders discussed creating AI-generated CSAM of Doe and other victims. The case adds to ongoing regulatory and legal scrutiny into the extent of the problem.
