Yahoo CEO Jim Lanzone highlighted the company's renewed focus on leveraging its legacy as an internet pioneer to attract younger audiences. Born in 1994, Yahoo's brand awareness is being positioned as a key asset amid declining consumer trust. Lanzone emphasized that the company is using its vintage label to connect with the Z generation while investing in self-developed AI tools to drive growth. Since joining Yahoo in 2021, Lanzone has been working to restructure the company, which was acquired by Apollo, into a more streamlined consumer technology group. As part of its transformation, Yahoo is aiming to establish itself in the AI era, despite years of being overshadowed by competitors like Google. The company plans to fully launch its AI-driven 'answer engine' Scout later this year, alongside several editorial and consumer products. Scout will combine open web information with Yahoo's own content archives, user data, and 30 years of search history, using technology licensed from multiple AI companies. Lanzone believes Yahoo's extensive proprietary search, content, and user data can differentiate its AI products from competitors that primarily rely on open web data. Therefore, the company has opted not to license content to other tech groups for model training. In terms of monetization, Yahoo intends to fund its AI answer service through advertising, allowing search ads to follow users into the AI answer space. In addition to Scout, Yahoo has launched an investment platform for retail investors called AlphaSpace and is expanding its subscription products. Wall Street is anticipating Yahoo's potential public listing or sale as early as next year, although Lanzone did not comment on this possibility. Instead, he emphasized that the company's current priority is to become a growth company first.
