OpenAI has notified users that the legacy ChatGPT Classic desktop application will cease operation on January 30, 2027. Users accessing the old interface will receive a notification prompting them to migrate to the new ChatGPT download page, with the company assuring that complete chat histories will transfer to the new application. The transition involves the evolution of the desktop Codex application into the new ChatGPT desktop suite, which will comprise three components: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Furthermore, OpenAI is streamlining its offerings by testing a merger between Chat and Work for a select group of users in the coming weeks. Codex will remain available as a distinct feature within the updated desktop app. Regarding usage, OpenAI plans to consolidate the usage limits for ChatGPT and Codex into a single shared quota, replacing the current separate calculations. The company stated that most users should not experience more frequent quota resets, as consumption depends on the complexity of the task and the model utilized; however, the 'unlimited instant' usage within subscriptions will not draw from this shared pool.
