Mark Zuckerberg's Biohub has launched a global initiative in collaboration with Google and the U.S. federal government to develop an AI-driven 'universal virtual cell.' The project aims to generate vast biological data to predict cellular behavior, enabling scientists to test experiments virtually before conducting them in labs. The initiative involves $1.8 billion in funding, data, computing, and measurement technology, with key participants including the Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health, Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, Meta, and various scientific organizations. The first phase will create a broad map of cellular biology, collecting diverse data on cell responses. The commercial partners will have exclusive access to the data for one year before it is shared publicly. Rives, a Biohub representative, noted that the project seeks to determine if cellular biology follows the same 'scaling laws' as other AI domains, with results expected soon. This effort builds on a previous $500 million investment announced in April.
